The Sentence Unseen: Portraits of Resilience Opening Program
The Sentence Unseen: Portraits of Resilience
Community Works Art Exhibition on Alcatraz Island
Opening: Saturday, June 13: 1:30*

*Ferry departs at 1:00, arrive & check in NO LATER than 12:30 at Pier 33

We are not always aware of the true price of sending someone to prison. The Sentence Unseen bears witness to the unrecognized impacts of incarceration  the sentence levied on children and families when a loved one is imprisoned.

Celebrated documentary photographer Ruth Morgan and visual artist Dee Morizono have curated a site-specific installation of compelling large format photographs, video diaries, and multi-media artwork that challenges assumptions about people behind bars and their families. Incarcerated men and women and children of incarcerated parents contributed to the exhibit, which will be on display until August 1 in partnership with the National Park Service on Alcatraz Island, part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Ticket purchase includes your ferry ticket. You DO NOT need to purchase an additional ferry ticket from Alcatraz Cruises.

You will be taking the 1:00pm ferry, departing from Pier 33, but you will need to check-in with Community Works at the pier to receive your tickets so please arrive between 12:00pm and 12:30pm (over 200 people will be checking in). The ferry is a bit chilly, so we ask that you bring warm clothes and have shoes that allow you to walk up a short hill if you are able (there are other means for accessibility as needed).

Please leave sufficient time for traffic and parking, if you choose to drive. There is very limited street parking and public parking is pricey. There are several public parking lots down the street; the cheapest option is a garage  for $22/day which you can access by passing the pier and turning left on Bay St followed by an immediate left to enter the parking garage.

If you are taking public transportation you can take MUNI or BART to Embarcadero and transfer to the MUNI's F streetcar.
