2015-2016 program OVER THE MOON
The moon - the symbol in song, story, poetry and legend of powerful and mysterious female energy that determines and regulates so much of life on our planet. since time began, and since music began to be written, reflections on the influence of the moon in human life have been a favorite subject and continue to be. The heavenly body with the most influence on us remains a mystery.
Over The Moon will include magnificent early statements by Claudio Monteverdi and Antoine Busnois giving way to the more romantic yearnings of Gustav Mahler. The program will also feature works by Elgar, Barber, and Finzi, and a new set of "Pierrot Lunaire" poems set by Nico Muhly.
Equally fascinated by the moon are contemporary composers such as Jaakko Mäntyjärvi and Mason Bates, whose compositions for chanticleer are audience favorites. Popular music is no stranger to the subject. Chanticleer is commissioning new arrangements of "Moon River" and "Fly Me to the Moon". The program will also include more recent songs such as Elbow's "Mirrorball".
