Mark Growden, Ama Trio, & The Mongrel Jews in Concert
Mark Growden is a singer, composer, writer, performer, and music educator based in San Francisco, CA. He was nominated for "Best Americana Artist" twice by the San Francisco Weekly Music Awards. Recorded live in the studio, his most recent album Lose me in the Sand is his second place-based album with Porto Franco Records and follows on the heels of his accordion-driven critically acclaimed Americana-noir masterpiece Saint Judas recorded in Oakland. The new album is crafted around the banjo, chosen by Growden for its timbre and its place in the history of American folk music. Lose Me in the Sand is a tribute to roughshod beginnings of American music, the spirit of resilience and fortitude that music represents, and to Growden's own rural mountain roots in Pinetown, a small, depression-stricken California logging town. Ama Trio's music has been described as a 'rarely yodeling, always scintillating latin american afro sephardic eastern european gypsy circus chamber band!' The unique and resonate blend of these 3 talented musicians from diverse backgrounds creates sumptuous music with depth, nuance, complexity and playfulness that de-colonizes the mind and celebrates the solidarity of all peoples everywhere who love Life! Their music has sabor and is richly polyrhythmic and soulfully melodic - gorgeous, fiery, haunting and joyful...this is the universal language, world music at its finest.
The Mongrel Jews are a Seattle street folk band influenced equally by pop and rock and the folk music of America, Ireland, England, and Eastern Europe. They're as likely to cover Prince as Tom Waits, as likely to model an original on an Irish fiddle tune as Delta blues. With instrumentation featuring banjo, mandolin, washboard, harmonica, ukulele, and accordion, they attack caterwauling protest shout-alongs and slinking gypsy ballads with equal enthusiasm. Just a year old, the young trio has played The Can Can and Hale's Palladium, as well as gracing the street corners and living rooms of Seattle.
