Toluma Farms Goat Dairy Toluma Farms has received Organic Certification and is the first and only Goat Dairy in Marin County that is certified Animal Welfare Approved. We will enjoy a guided tour of the farm and barns, learn about sustainable goat dairy operation and get to know three different kinds of goats. Baby goats will have just arrived in February and if we are lucky we can observe the milking process. Toluma Farms is about to start their own creamery. They currently supply their goat milk to the Redwood Hill Farms of Sonoma County and participants can purchase Redwood Hill Farms Cheese in the Cowgirl Creamery in Point Reyes Station.
Lafranchi Ranch and Nicasio Valley Cheese Company The Lafranchi Ranch is home of 400 cows, 75% of which produce organic milk. The Lafranchi family, three brothers and three sisters, founded the Nicasio Valley Cheese Company beginning of 2010. They produce six different brands of cheese, all of them made from 100% organic farmstead cow's milk. We will get a guided tour of the ranch where we will see the cows and calves and then visit the Nicasio Valley Cheese Company. We will be introduced to organic cheese making and will enjoy a cheese tasting on site. Thereafter we can explore the cheese as well as other other local treats such as cheese crackers and jam in the shop.
Lunch Bring your own lunch - we will stop by a lovely picnic area where participants can enjoy their own lunch. The Marin Agricultural Trust will discuss the important work they do to help preserve farms like the ones we visit today.
Barinaga Ranch Barinaga Ranch is an 800 acres organic sheep diary and creamery in Marshall, on the east shore of Tomales Bay. The creamery produces unique Basque style cheese, Baserri and Txiki, which is sold to the local Cowgirl Creamy in Point Reyes station. We will get a guided to tour explore the ranch. We will then learn about the sheep cheese making process and take in glimpse in the cheese making room. We will visit the newborn lambs and can observe the milking process. Barinaga Ranch lamb sausages can be purchased on site.
Please bring your lunch snack and water, and some cash if you would like to purchase cheese from the farmers.
We recommend comfortable, closed shoes.
