Cuddle Magic with Phyllis Chen
Cuddle Magic is a large ensemble from Brooklyn and Philadelphia that performs deftly crafted, lush, whimsical songs with wide-ranging instrumentation including strings, percussion, vibraphone, trumpet, clarinet, keyboards, guitars, and many voices. After forming as a quintet just over 4 years ago, they have gradually come to incorporate more and more of their musical friends into the band, constructing intricate soundscapes that include elements of folk music, avant-garde classical music, world music, and urban music. Tonight Cuddle Magic will be joined by acclaimed keyboardist Phyllis Chen. Praised by the New York Times for her "delightful quirkiness matched with interpretive sensitivity," Phyllis is one of the world's leading proponents of the toy piano. She is a student of André Watts and a member of ICE (International Contemporary Ensemble), a Chicago and New York-based collective. She founded the UnCaged Toy Piano Composition Competition to encourage new works for the instrument, and her program for this concert includes a performance of the first winner, Georg Hajdu's "Tsunami," and pieces by Nathan Davis, Andrian Pertout, and John Cage.
