Lakshmi "La Chimi" direct from Seville, Spain
This year, Lakshmi "La Chimi" was a finalist in Spain's prestigious Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco de Córdoba (National Contest of Flamenco Art of Cordoba) "the contest of the contests," leaving a wake of surprising reactions: "un desgarrador homenaje a los románticos de lo jondo" ("a heartwrenching homage to the romantics of classic flamenco"), Alberto Garcia Kings, ABC.
Living in Spain since 2002, she has studied with several prominent Gypsy artists such as: Los Farruco, Angelita Vargas, Juana Amaya, Yolanda Heredia and Concha Vargas. She has earned an impressive trademark in venues such as La Carbonería, Los Gallos, La Feria de Abril and other flamenco tablaos and peñas.
Though still residing principally in Sevilla, Spain, Lakshmi visits the United States yearly to teach and perform. She has been performing actively over the last several years in Spain: flamenco fashion designer José Tarriño chose her as his top model for his 2007 collection. She participated in the Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla 2008 as a soloist in the Peñas de Guardía series. She modeled for the exposition Mil Besos by famous photographer Ruvén Afanador. She performed in her first music video with the Lebanese director Rindala Kodeih, a piece which climbed to the top of the charts in Arabic-speaking countries. She was elected to dance and close the Concurso Internacional de Cante de Puertollano 2008, where she performed for flamenco legends such as Carmen Linares and José de la Tomasa. Recently she appeared as a soloist with Sevilla-based group, Sentir Flamenco, in the series Noches en los Jardines de la Buhaira. She continues to dazzle audiences daily as one of the headliners for El Palacio Andaluz in Sevilla.
