Barthé: Art and Culture in the African Diaspora
In honor of African American History Month, the Diversity Council of The Bishop's School presents Barthé: Art and Culture in the African Diaspora.
This multi-media presentation will focus on global social change through art, culture, and history from the African Diaspora with special attention to the contributions of artist, Richmond Barthé.
Featured Presenters
Samella Lewis, Ph.D. is an African American artist whose works are exhibited at the Getty Center, the Art Institute of Chicago and Haus der Kirche, Germany. Dr. Lewis is a Fulbright Fellowship recipient and a Distinguished Scholar. She has written and published numerous children's and art education books. Her most recent work is Barthé - His Life in Art.
Through mixed media collage, Robin J. Miller, a New York artist, works to educate and inspire students on the African American experience. Ms. Miller's works include a Commission with Pepsi to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and an exhibit with Faith Ringgold. She is the author and illustrator of Jazz History Quilt Book , Back to School: A Children's Book of Poems, and Peace and Racial Harmony.
Copies of the book Barthé - His Life in Art, signed by the author Samella Lewis, Ph.D., will be available for purchase during the reception. Cash or check only, please.
