Leading Women: A Gala Celebrating Women's Success In Business

March 8, 2011

Keynote address by Elisabeth Paté-Cornell, Stanford University

This elegant affair closes a day-long summit focusing on the theme, "Equality Across the Board: Empowering Women and Girls."  Throughout the day, speakers and participants will tackle many critical issues facing women and girls worldwide, including: feminizing the issue of water; crisis in maternal and healthcare for women and girls; ending violence against women; women, culture, age, and power.

Dr. Paté-Cornell is a world leader in research related to engineering risk analysis, risk management, decision analysis under uncertainty and a distinguished engineering, mathematics and consulting specialist. Her work is inspirational to women and girls interested in business and engineering.

This year's theme is "EQUALITY ACROSS THE BOARD: EMPOWERING WOMEN AND GIRLS". The Summit will focus on five of the twelve key areas of concern identified in the United Nations 1995 Beijing Declaration which was unanimously adopted by the representatives of the 189 countries attending the 1995 United Nation's Fourth World Conference on Women.

As discrimination against women remains one of the world's most important  issue, this summit and dinner will aim at providing a forum for discussion on women's equality and human rights on global, national and local levels. Come and help us building strong partnerships to defend and advance women's right and identifying the next steps needed for success.

In order to help us in achieving these goals, this dinner will include a presentation focusing on women in business by Dr. Elisabeth Paté-Cornell.

Dr. M. Elisabeth Paté-Cornell was born in Dakar, Senegal, in 1948. In 1971 she came to study and live in the United States, where she received a Masters degree in Operations Research (OR) in 1972 and a Ph.D. in Engineering-Economic Systems (EES) in 1978, both from Stanford University. She is presently Professor and Chair of the Department of Management Science and Engineering, a Senior Fellow (by courtesy) of the Stanford Institute for International Studies and the chair of the Stanford Committee on Research.

Being also a member of the National Academy of Engineering's Council, a member of the Advisory Council of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and a member of the French Académie des Technologies, Dr. Paté-Cornell is a world leader in research related to engineering risk analysis, risk management, decision analysis under uncertainty, and more generally, the use of Bayesian probability to process incomplete information. Her models have been applied to a wide variety of topics, ranging from the risk management of the NASA shuttle tiles to that of offshore oil platforms and medical systems such as anesthesia during surgery.

She has been a consultant to industrial firms and government organizations, including, recently, the Columbia Accident Investigation Board. She has received several best-paper awards from professional organizations such as the American Nuclear Society and the Decision Analysis Society of INFORMS.
