Kung Pao Kosher Comedy and El Rio Present...
Comedy Returns to El Rio!

Now celebrating its 6th Anniversary, this monthly (every 3rd Thursday) comedy show features an eclectic mix of comedians from the Bay Area and beyond. This popular show takes place at El Rio in the Mission District, where SF comedian/comedy producer, Lisa Geduldig (Kung Pao Kosher Comedy) began doing stand up in 1989. In 2009, to commemorate her 20th anniversary in comedy, she resurrected El Rio's comedy night. She owes her comedy career to the late Malcolm Thornley, owner of El Rio at the time, gave her a spot on his weekly comedy show.

The May 21st show features Tom Ammiano (The Mother of Gay Comedy, former California Assemblymember), Diane Amos (The Pine Sol Lady), Justin Lucas, Nicole Calasich, Lisa Geduldig, and surprise guests. Join us on our 6th Anniversary for laughs and cake.

Tom Ammiano, The Mother of Gay Comedy, has been a stand up comic since 1980 when he pioneered gay comedy night at the Valencia Rose in San Francisco. He is also a legendary SF leader who has served the city for four decades as a teacher, School Board President, President of the SF Board of Supervisors, and has had an unmatched record of achievement as a member of the State Assembly. In 1975, Tom came out as the first openly gay teacher in SF. In 1977 he worked on the No on 6 campaign with Harvey Milk, successfully defeating an anti-gay initiative to ban gay teachers in California. Tom went on to be elected to the SF Board of Education from 1990-1994, the Board of Supervisors from 1994-2008, and was elected to the California State Assembly in 2008. Tom has been at the forefront of reform on many issues including affordable housing, LGBTQ rights, education, labor, immigration, prisons, and marijuana. He has given a voice to underrepresented communities throughout his career.

Diane Amos is a San Francisco-based actress, improv artist, and comedian who is known as The Pine Sol Lady for having starred in their national commercials for 20 years. She has appeared in numerous films including Nine Months, Copycat, Angels in the Outfield, EDTV, and Twisted and Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine. Diane was a semi-finalist in Star Search, has been on A& E's Evening at The Improv, Lifetime's Girls' Night Out, and Comedy Central's Women Aloud. She has also been a winner on the game shows: Wheel of Fortune, $25,000 Pyramid, and Super Password. Diane was raised in San Francisco by two lesbian mothers and attended Washington High School in the Richmond District, where took an improvisational comedy class...and the rest is history.

Justin Lucas, a San Francisco native, began doing stand up in 2011 at the Punchline, Cobb's, and other popular Bay Area venues. He has opened for well-known comics including Alec Mapa, Bobby Lee, and Faizon Love. Justin has successfully entered a number of comedy competitions, becoming the 1st runner-up in the 2013 Bay Area Black Comedy Competition and the 1st place winner in the 2013 Mic is Hot Comedy Competition. His most recent achievements include winning a 2015 Bay Area Reporter Besties Award for Best Male Comedian and making his TV premiere in HBO's Looking, opposite Jonathan Groff.

Nicole Calasich is a San Francisco-based comedian and writer who performs stand up and sketch comedy primarily at the Punchline, Lost Weekend, the San Jose Improv, Rooster T. Feather's, Cobb's, and festivals like SF Sketchfest and the Sh*ts & Giggles Festival. She's revived all her critically acclaimed sketch work and absurdist tendencies in Attractive Camp, a comedy smorgasbord she produces at the underground comedy venue, Lost Weekend Video.

Lisa Geduldig is a local comic and comedy producer who's the creator, producer, and MC of a variety of comedy shows including Kung Pao Kosher Comedy (now in its 23rd year); Funny Girlz: A Smorgasbord of Women Comedians; The Color of Funny: A Multi-Cultural Comedy Show; and A Muslim, A Mormon, and A Jew Walk into A Bar: The Comedy of Religion.
