Arts Corps Presents The 2011 Youth Speaks Seattle Poetry Grand Slam Finals
HOSTED BY GEO OF THE BLUE SCHOLARS WITH CANARY SING, VICIOUS PUPPIES AND DJ LEOPOLD BLOOM
Each year, the Youth Speaks Seattle Slam Series showcases some of the best in original youth spoken word poetry, dazzling with raw insight and impassioned performance. This year, the Grand Slam will move from the Moore Theater to Town Hall, where twelve teen poets will compete to secure a spot on the 2010 Seattle Youth Poetry Slam Team.
The team will travel to the Bay Area in July to represent Seattle at the Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam, which convenes young poets from over seventy different cities to compete and perform. Since 2007, HBO has produced Russell Simmons Presents Brave New Voices, a documentary of the annual slam series that showcases the work of youth poets.
The Grand Slam is the culmination of the Youth Slam Series, an all-city poetry slam competition that engages upwards of fifty young poets and hundreds of audience members in an always-inspirational display of performance poetry.
Since 2003, Youth Speaks Seattle has been the city's premier non-profit for youth poetry and spoken word, creating avenues for youth voices through creative writing instruction and performance opportunities. Over the years, Youth Speaks has conducted residencies and visited classrooms in nearly all of Seattle's public high schools, and hosted a monthly open mic series that has thrived for nearly six years.
In January 2011, Youth Speaks Seattle came under the umbrella of Arts Corps, an organization that brings greater exposure and sustainability to Youth Speaks' critical work. Founded in 2000 on the principle that all young people not just those with resources should have access to quality arts learning opportunities, Arts Corps has grown to become a leading nonprofit arts education organization in Seattle. Arts Corps serves over 2,000 K-12th grade students a year, primarily at schools and community centers serving low-income youth who often have no other opportunities for arts learning.
