Roscoe Holcomb: From Daisy, Kentucky plus John Cohen & The Dust Busters live!
John Cohen / 2010, USA / Digital Video / 90min
Legendary photographer, musician and filmmaker John Cohen (The High Lonesome Sound, The End of an Old Song, Sara & Maybelle: the Original Carter Family) brings his newest film to the Grand Illusion for a night of live music and discussion. As a filmmaker, Cohen has made over a dozen films about American folk music, Andean culture, and the British and Scottish roots of ballad singing. He lived in Greenwich Village during the folk bloom of the 1950s & 60s where he co-founded the vital folk outfit the New Lost City Ramblers. As a photographer, his lens has captured everyone from Bob Dylan to Jack Kerouac to Robert Frank. Tonight he'll screen his new film, Roscoe Holcomb: From Daisy, Kentucky, which explores the life of Eastern Kentucky banjo picker Roscoe Holcomb, along with other films from his oeuvre and host a Q&A. Then, old time string band The Dust Busters (of Brooklyn, NY) and John will perform some tunes in the intimate setting of the Grand Illusion. Co-presented by NW Folklife.
