What they Say about Village Pub Theatre...
...they're creating a brand new vortex of powerful theatrical activity in Edinburgh; everyone who enjoys the raw energy of theatre should sample it **** Scotsman
...experience an evening of live script-in-hand performance, created by some of Scotland's brightest young writers and actors... it's not surprising that Edinburgh's Village Pub Theatre has fast become a such popular feature of the city's grass-roots theatre scene... **** Joyce MacMillan
Yet a remarkable truth is that, with strong direction and skilled performers, 'rehearsed readings'can be just as powerful a theatrical experience as a "fully staged"production; indeed, they can be even more engaging, not least because the audience has to be altogether more committed to suspending their disbelief and using their imaginations to see past the casually-dressed actors wondering about a bare stage with just the script in their hands. - ****Broadway Baby
FOR the last couple of years, an expanding group of writers, actors and directors have set up shop in a pub function room in Leith to showcase their work at a series of lo-fi monthly events...VPT has quietly become a significant force on the theatre scene. - ****The Herald
ABOUT VILLAGE PUB THEATRE Village Pub Theatre (VPT) is a lo-fi, new writing theatre collective based in the Village Pub in Leith, Edinburgh. For their regular events they stage new short works in the form of monthly rehearsed readings in an informal pub setting accompanied by home baking and beer. The company is also involved in developing full length scripts and presenting new writing in other venues and contexts.
In its first year the company produced over 50 plays by 26 playwrights including work from our core group of playwrights and guest writers including some of the most exciting voices in Scottish theatre. They often write to a monthly theme such as their annual Halloween special or the more unusual titles such as Parent's Evening, Erotica or Empires.
The Village Pub Theatre launched 'Tweet Plays', in March 2013 - a whole play in 140 characters submitted via Twitter and performed in the pub. The project resulted in the creation of some 170+ Twitter plays shared with us and performed in the pub. There was also live performances of the Tweet Plays on Radio Scotland's Culture Show. In October and November 2013 The Village Pub Theatre worked with the Royal Lyceum Theatre Company to present Tweet Plays inspired by the shows in the Lyceum season and 70 tweet plays were performed on the Lyceum stage.
In March 2014 they held a weeks' residency at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh and this May they are coming CoastWord!
