In 2010, we are launched theBerghain and Panorama Bar residency at The Bunker, and tonight we present our biggest one yet. For anyone who's been living under a rock for the past five years, Berlin's Berghain and Panorama Bar have established themselves as two of the world's greatest clubs (under one roof, no less). Known for having some of the best resident DJs in the world, an impeccable curation of guests, top-notch sound systems, and weekend-long debaucherous parties, they get everything right and throw what are arguably some the best parties in the world. For the fourth edition of this residency we couldn't be more pleased to present our old friend Marcel Dettmann alongside rising star Steffi, with the very special addition of a Surgeon live set. If you want to attend this event, we HIGHLY recommend the advance tickets, as we will likely sell out or have very few at the door.
You can't really talk about what happened in techno in the past few years without mentioning Marcel Dettmann. His sound is deep, raw, uncompromising techno, with heavy nods to both the classic originators of the genre (Carl Craig, Juan Atkins, Basic Channel) and newer producers on the cutting edge of today's sound (T++, Sandwell District, Shed, Luke Hess). This sound is very well presented by Dettmann on his "Berghain 02" mix CD, which was named Compilation of the Year by Resident Advisor in 2008. Dettmann's real claim to fame is his residency at what many consider to be not only the best club in Berlin, but also the very best club in the world, Berghain. Dettmann's regular appearances in the debaucherous downstairs Berghain space (known for it's thundering sound system, dark corners and no-camera policy) have cemented his reputation as one of the best techno DJ's in the world. In the past few years, Marcel has also really come into his own as a producer, with amazing tracks on Berghain's Ostgut Ton (including his debut album last year), as well has his own label, MDR. Dettmann's previous three sets at the Bunker rocked the club to it's foundation, with many special moments, and he has named The Bunker one of his top 5 party spots in the world. This time, Dettmann returns to present what is sure to be a special 5 hour closing set.
The Bunker has always strived to present music that is very cerebral yet keeps the dancefloor moving. It can be a tricky balance to maintain, but Birmingham's Tony Child aka Surgeon does it better than just about anyone. His first records came out in 1995 on Ideal and Regis' Downwards imprint, and instantly caught the attention of all of the top techno DJs in the world. It was clear from the start that Surgeon's productions were in a league of their own. His early singles also caught the attention of Tresor, who released his first three albums and gave him a residency at their club (at that time a main hub of the European techno community). In the late 90s and early 00s, techno kind of hit a lull as many producers were unsuccessfully trying way too hard to reproduce Jeff Mills' legendary Purpose Maker series and coming up with few original ideas. During this time, Surgeon stretched out and his records got stranger and more innovative but remained relevant dancefloor tools for all the biggest DJs. With a slew of amazing remixes and new material leaking out over the past few years (with much more to come soon), Surgeon has remained as relevant as ever. Tonight Surgeon and his wife Doris present the North American debut of his live audio/video set.
Panorama Bar resident Steffi has remained a bit behind the scenes until very recently. Her career started in Amsterdam, where she was a successful DJ and promoter for many years, producing interesting events on the fringes to counter-balance the heavily commercialized dance music scene there. She's run the Dutch electro/techno label Klakson alongside Dexter for 10 years now, releasing a slow stream of high quality singles. In 2007, she moved to Berlin and started her quarterly residency at Panorama Bar that quickly became monthly. Although Steffi has been known mostly for her DJing, her productions began to see the light of day, with a track made specifically for Tama Sumo's mix CD last year, and a 12" of her own on Ostgut Ton in 2010. Late last year, her "Yours" 12" was sold exclusively by Hardwax as a limited edition 12", and her debut album is released on Ostgut Ton this month. She's also recently launched the Dolly label, to put out super limited hand stamped 12"s produced by her close friends.
