Albert Herring

A comic chamber opera in three-acts, Albert Herring is the "coming-of-age" story of a hapless antihero in a town of wacky English villagers preparing for their May Day festivities. An outcast with an overbearing mother, Herring is embarrassingly crowned the King of May after all the village's young women are deemed too sinful for a rightful Queen of May. But when two rebellious young lovers spike his punch, he revolts disappearing after the celebration and spending all his winnings on a night on the town.

Britten's musically complex work is filled with satire and whimsy to match his lighthearted tale of finding your own way and coming of age. Premiered in 1947, Britten retells Guy Maupassant's short story Le rosier de Madame Husson with the familiar theme of a comical "bildungsroman" as Herring tries to escape the societal constraints of living in a small-town.
