Kaweh - Jazzy Flamenco with a Latin Flair!
âJust as leafing through an atlas can transport you from one region of the world to another in the flip of a few pages, so too does Kaweh's music.â â Yoshi Kato, MetroActive
When we call the ensemble Kaweh a jazzy flamenco band with a Latin flair, weâre really only telling part of the story. Flamenco is certainly at the heart of their sound, but this sensational group incorporates the sounds of Brazil, the Middle East, and indeed the entire Mediterranean region into one thrilling musical adventure.
From the thrilling pulse of flamenco, through the fiery rhythms of Latin and Brazilian music, to the yearning soul of Middle Eastern sounds and the spontaneous joy of jazz, Kaweh leads audiences through a wonderful travelogue of music, culture and soul.
Kaweh's music can be best described as World, Jazz, Nuevo Flamenco with a touch of worldly flavor. Kaweh, the group, is led by Kaweh, the musician, a guitarist/vocalist who was born in Germany, spent four years living in Iran, learning Farsi and soaking up Middle Eastern culture, and moved to the U.S. as a teenager. The bandâs rich, diverse sound, comes from a mixture of cultures within the group. Latin Jazz, Rumba Flamenco, Brazilian, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern are just a few of the styles one hears at any Kaweh performance, with vocals in English, Farsi, Spanish and Italian.
Along with Kaweh himself, the group Kaweh includes Latin drummer/percussionist Louie Flores Jr., keyboardist Alex Specht, Cuban guitarist/vocalist Kenia Rodriguez, Latin congero Joe Ruelas and bassist Jordan Brysk. Over the past several years, Kawehâs popularity has exploded. In 2005 alone, they performed over 200 shows, appearing at more than a dozen Arts Festivals throughout California, highlighted by a performance at the San Jose Jazz Festival.
In 2000, Kaweh released his first CD, Seven, an album consisting of jazz, folk, funk, fusion and middle eastern sounds. His second album, Play Spanish, (2004) was an instumental mix of nuevo flamenco, latin, jazz and middle eastern. In 2005, Kaweh released Long Ago, an uplifting and romantic instrumental album combining Spanish guitar with Latin and Brazilian rhythms. Kaweh's 4th album, España, was released last year, featuring a more traditional Flamenco feel, with classical, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences.
