Dave Mathews Hammond B-3 Organ Quartet w/ Kenny Washington
The pairing of Hammond B3 ace Dave Mathews and âjaw droppingâ blues/jazz vocalist Kenny Washington for Jazz at Pearlâs June Tuesday Night Residency is an inspired one. Mathews and Washington will peform together every Tuesday night at Pearlâs in a series of high spirited shows guaranteed to produce a full throttle musical combustion. Hereâs what the critics say:
"Dave Mathews is an amazing Hammond organ ace." - Blues Review Magazine
"On the Hammond B3 organ, [Mathews] has created a sound that's lithe and linear, harmonically sophisticated and fiercely swinging." - jazz writer Andrew Gilbert
"If you have never heard Kenny Washington sing before, get ready for a jaw dropping experience. Kenny is a jazz vocalist virtuoso. Emulating the classic styles of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn, infusing colors of Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway, Kennyâs free, playful approach . . . is awe inspiring." AllaboutJazz.com
With stylistic influences from Fats Waller to James Booker to Nat King Cole, Mathews has done it all as an organist and pianist. He jumped into public view in the 1980's as organist for the seminal funk band, Tower of Power. He's toured with Tower of Power, Sheila E. and Boz Scaggs, and since 2000, Mathews has been the organist for the great Etta James.
New Orleans native Kenny Washington has jazz, blues and gospel in his blood. Heâs sung around the world with U.S Navy Band, served as featuring vocalist at the Top of the Mark in the Mark Hopkins Hotel for eight years, and is in constant demand as a performer around the Bay Area.
For their June Tuesday Night Jazz at Pearlâs Residency, Mathews and Washington will be joined by the fiery soulman Barry Finnerty on guitar and fluid rhythm master Akira Tana on drums.
"Born in Berkeley on April 16, 1959, Dave Mathews left home at 16, and soon after was supporting himself playing in R&B and top-40 bands around the East Bay. In many ways, his musical education captures the East Bay's uniquely diverse cultural melange. He spent his formative years soaking up blues with Tim Kaihatsu and honing his Latin chops with Ray Obiedo, Pete Escovedo and daughter Sheila E. He gained recognition as a potent R&B player with Tower of Power, a group he anchored for two and half years in the mid-1980s. He's delved deeply into Crescent City grooves with Maria Muldaur, and more recently has been displaying his fine feel for straight ahead swing with Kim Nalley. Mostly self-taught, Mathews gleaned jazz piano insights from Mark Levine, Dick Hindman, John Marabuto, and Dick Whittington. His gift for assimilating and personalizing various styles makes this one of the year's most satisfying B3 sessions, a thoroughly enjoyable jaunt that begs for further forays." - Andrew Gilbert, from the liner notes for Mathews' recent CD, The Coltrane Connection.
âOnstage, Kenny Washington is the Superman of the Bay Area jazz scene, a vocalist with an exuberantly supple tenor that glides effortlessly
