Blues In the Round - 6th Annual Acoustic Blues Fest
NYC blues guitarist Bill Sims and VT harmonica player Mark LaVoie are down home, back porch, crossroads, and hellhounds all at once. Their old-school sound harkens back to a time before electricity turned the blues up loud, when feel and soul were everything. Between them, Sims and LaVoie have played with legends such as Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, and many more. They've been touring as a duo for fifteen years. Marjorie Thompson is a life-long guitarist who turned pro in 2001after having seven children and becoming the Dean of Brown University's Dept of Biological Sciences. Her music is deeply influenced by the Piedmont country blues and ragtime. She has amassed a body of innovative original work, touching on traditional and contemporary themes, some soul-wrenching and some more likely to elicit a smile. Miraculously, given her other heavy commitments, Marjorie manages to tour extensively, and teach guitar workshops privately and at Jorma Kaukonen's Furpeace Ranch Guitar Camp. With a solid beat of finger-picking, foot stomping, ringing slide-guitar, rock solid percussion, Saratoga Springs duo Mark Tolstrup and Dale Haskell are the perennial anchors of our annual blues fest. They reprise the authentic sounds of the American landscape, from New Orleans to Tin Pan Alley, with a growing body of original material that fits neatly alongside the greatest classics of the genre.
