Rock Killough & Friends at Blooming Colors
Sundilla steps away from the AUUF for a rare alternate-venue show, and it will be one for the ages, as the legendary Rock Killough makes his triumphant return to Auburn. Long a fixture on the local and national music scene, the Alabama native took some time off from music for a while, but now he's back and as great as ever. And his first Auburn-area performance will take place on Friday, May 29, at Blooming Colors, 1192 South Donahue St.
Rock has had his songs recorded by such luminaries as The Oak Ridge Boys, Hank Williams, Jr., Sammy Kershaw, Johnny Rodriguez, Brenda Lee, Jerry Jeff Walker, Carole King, Waylon Jennings, Mickey Newbury, Randy Travis, and too many more to mention. And he has played guitar, harmonica, and/or sung with Merle Haggard, Hank Snow, Hank Jr., and many more.
As a headliner, he has teamed with Dan Eckley, Billy Earl McClelland, Darrel Roberts, Jimmy Grubbs, Larry T. Wilson, and John Joiner in various duos and groups. For years it was all but impossible to spend much time sampling the Auburn nightlife scene without seeing Rock perform, and the following he built was impressive and has been waiting for this day for a long time.
The late, great Mickey Newbury said "Not only have I recorded one of his songs, but I will stand on anybody's coffee table and say in a loud voice that nobody on this planet is a bigger fan of Rock Killough's than Mickey Newbury." The Brownwood Bulletin wrote "Killough is a combination of folk, bluegrass and country. The lyrics to his songs make you think of times past, of childhood, of loves lost. In a word, he is a poet." And Nightflying magazine said "He's a little bit country, a little bit folk, and more than a little all right."
If you remember Rock, you know what we're talking about. And if you're a newcomer to the scene, you're about to find out what all of the old hands have been raving about. Come to Blooming Colors on April 3 and experience some genuine Auburn music history and get a glimpse of the future, too, because now that Rock Killough is back, he's probably not going anywhere anytime soon.
This alternate-venue Sundilla concert will take place at Blooming Colors (1192 S. Donahue) on Friday, May 29, at 7:30. Admission will be $12 at the door, but advance tickets are just $10 and are available at Blooming Colors, and at www.sundillamusic.com. There will be a selection of food and coffee for sale by Blooming Colors, but you will be allowed to bring your favorite beverage, should you prefer something else.
