FOOTNOTES
EDAM Dance presents new dance by Peter Bingham and guest artists Claire French and Jay Hirabayashi.
Jay Hirabayashi (Executive Director, Kokoro Dance) reflects on love over a lifetime in two simultaneous duets - one a primal, somewhat aggressive and youthful dance, the other a geriatric yet nonetheless lusty coupling. Performed by Barbara Bourget, Billy Marchenski, Molly McDermott and Jay Hirabayashi, danced to the music of The Swans, an American experimental rock band led by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Michael Gira.
Claire French (co-Artistic Director, Restless Productions) began her piece by exploring how instinct and desire work their way into and through the creative process. The result is Based on a True Story, a duet performed by dancer Caitlin Griffin and cellist Marina Hasselberg. James Maxwell (co-Artistic Director, Restless Productions) composed the music for this piece.
The devil is in the details, and nowhere is this more evident than in Peter Bingham's offering, performed by Delia Brett, Anne Cooper, Olivia Shaffer and Chengxin Wei. Bingham and his dancers have constructed a piece by carefully building layer upon layer, the complexity of the work developed over time as each minute gesture/physical impulse is examined, defined and then redefined again. The goal is to keep the work on an edge, never allowing repetition to lead to complacency - the result, an intricate demanding dance that grows in depth with each presentation.
