LEAR by William Shakespeare Directed by Andrew Cuk
Gender is no limit to feelings of loyalty, betrayal, greed, love and madness. Queen Lear falls into the same tragic spiral of error and insanity.
Shakespeare wrote King Lear at the height of his popularity and writing powers. A tragedy based on the legend of a mythological Celtic King from the 8th century BCE, he outlines for his time a way a King should act. Our contemporary time contains our own monarchs and absolute rulers: foolish and otherwise, male and female. Gender is no limit to feelings of loyalty, betrayal, greed, love and madness. In John Abbott's production, we have modernized the legend to fit our time. Lear is a Queen. Two of her daughters pretend to love her to gain advantage. She mistakes the true filial love of her third daughter and falls in the same tragic spiral of error and insanity. Shakespeare's words but our story.
