Tidings
Edinburgh four-piece Tidings are a cinematic, instrumental post rock band. They make music with melodies that vary between delicate and thunderous. It's the thread that holds the songs together that's too often missing from instrumental music you need the layers and the vertical slices, but it needs a core. That's where Tidings really shine as the thread intertwines with the layering, regularly swapping between instruments and themes and even with the appropriate moments of silence, but always there making the songs feel complete. You are left with a ten minute song that doesn't feel like one idea tacked onto another.
And here is a recent live review courtesy of the very splendid Echoes & Dust: Change of scene and with perfect timing TIDINGS are on the stage. The Edinburgh-based post-metal band was nearly flawless. The music came across as the perfect live equivalent to what the recordings provide. The instrumental harmonies were wonderful, and the drums were as crisp and tight as one could expect live. With the three songs from the new upcoming album we all moved to the darkness of a deep world where there's still room for melodies and light, like in the track 'The Bone Orchard' that, with its approximately 15 minute length, is a really hearth-breaking music journey that will please both post-rock and post-metal lovers. Being the second live show of TIDINGS in a few days I still remember every note that they played and i'm completely in love with the opening 'On His Wings Hung Regret And Remorse' and I can still feel the complete adulation of the public that happened with the last minutes of the closing 'Mighty Fallen' that are both aggressive and warm: the complex exchanges and guitar interplay, rooted by a tight yet fluid rhythm section all together served a devastating ending. It's during these rare moments when I find myself lost in sound.
Fly On Byrd, fly on
Sheffield based 5 piece instrumental post metal/post rockers Fly On Byrd, fly on first came to our eyes and ears at the wonderful Strangeforms Festival in Leeds in April. Suffice to say that the musical magnificence they gave us meant we had to book them! We reckon you'll love them as much as we do...
Alma
Alma are the radiant post-rock lovechild of members of two of our favourite bands, Pete Lambrou (Monsters Build Mean Robots/Codes in the Clouds) and Ciaran Morahan (Codes in the Clouds). Recently formed, ad already with their debut single due for release next month on Fierce Panda, Alma paint beautiful soundscapes with lush melodies and delicate guitars.
As well as this post rock perfection, we my have a guest DJ set thrown in for good measure too!
