The Chris Klaxton Group with Taylor O'Donnell
For this concert, Chris and Taylor will be joined by bassist and guitarist Sam Weber, and drummer Jay Sawyer playing a mix of standards, classic jazz fare, and their arrangements of pop/ folk / rock favorites / standards of today.
Taylor O'Donnell, a Colorado native, is a contemporary vocalist who mainly uses her roots in classical vocal performance, musical theater, jazz, folk and R&B. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Jazz Studies from Western Michigan University, and graduated with a Master's Degree in Jazz Performance from the University of Miami. Her instruction in jazz/classical voice performance and pedagogy has come from teachers including Diana Spradling (renowned jazz pedagog) Fred Hersch (Grammy award winning composer and pianist), Grammy nominated vocalists Peter Eldridge and Lauren Kinhan, and New Hampshire native, Lila Mori. Taylor also studied composition with celebrated trumpet players and composers, Dave Douglas and Terence Blanchard during her time in the Henry Mancini Institute Ensemble at the University of Miami. Highlights of Taylor's performing and teaching career have been an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show working with producer David Foster, performing at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in NYC, working in Miami with Grammy award winning producer Rudy Perez, working at Miami Dade College as a Professor of Jazz Voice, and singing background vocals for singer-songwriter Ben Folds. Taylor has performed alongside Donny McCaslin, Terence Blanchard, Lyle Mays, Fred Hersch, Jamey Haddad, Janis Siegel, the Real Group, New York Voices, Sunny Wilkinson, Peter Eldridge, Lauren Kinhan, and with choral group, Seraphic Fire. Currently, Taylor performs with various groups in the Seacoast area playing jazz and folk, and also can be seen in the up and coming soul group, Mother Superior and the Sliding Royales. Taylor is proud to hold a private studio in Maine, along with her current teaching positions at Bowdoin College and Portsmouth Music & Art Center. In addition to teaching vocal contemporary style and classical technique for all ages and experience levels, she is available for composition and piano lessons in the Maine and New Hampshire Seacoast area.
Sam Weber is a bassist, guitarist, educator, composer, arranger, bandleader, transcriber, and connoisseur of quarter note durations. A native of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Sam is an alumnus of Western Michigan University, earning both a BA in Jazz Studies (2010) and an MA in Music (2011). Sam relocated to New York City in 2012, where he currently performs full time, playing everything from jazz, hip hop, and rock to bluegrass and contemporary classical music. Sam is also active as an educator, and has traveled around the US as well as internationally presenting clinics, lectures, and masterclasses.
Born in Grand Rapids, MI, Jay Sawyer has studied jazz drumming with several outstanding and well-respected jazz artists. Among them, the great Billy Hart, Tim Froncek, Keith Hall and Dana Hall. Each nurtured his passion and skill for the art of jazz percussion. As a student at Western Michigan University, Jay performed with the well-known WMU Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Nonet under the direction of Professors Trent Kynaston and Scott Cowan. These groups toured extensively and participated in several well-known jazz festivals that include the Notre Dame, Elmhurst and Detroit Jazz Festivals. Jay continued his studies as Graduate Assistant to Dana Hall while at The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. There he got work with such artists as Chip McNeill, Chip Stephens, Jim Pugh, Tito Carillo, Glenn Wilson, Ron Bridgewater, Dana Hall and many others. Jay received his Bachelors of Music from Western Michigan University and his Masters of Music from The University of Illinois. He has performed or shared the stage with artists such as Benito Gonzales, Stefon Harris, Donny McCaslin and many others. He has also performed at the Detroit and Chicago Jazz Festivals as well as many other prominent venues around the USA. Jay currently resides in New York City.
