STEAM OF LIFE, NR, 81 min., In Finnis
A film by Joonas Berghälland Mika Hotakainen. An emotional portrait of ordinary men from all walks of life speaking their deepest, darkest truths in the decidedly secular confessional of the sauna, Steam of Life started with a central idea: Men in Finland find it difficult to express themselves in the light of day, but once they're disrobed and sweating in a cedar-lined closet, they're suddenly baring their souls. "It's just a way of life in Finland: Men go to the sauna. It's such a deep part of the culture that no matter where you are in your life, even if you are on the streets, you go to the sauna. The sauna is the church for Finnish men," says Berghall.
