All You Need is Love -- Beatles Benefit
Fans of British Invasion era pop music, young and old alike, will be thrilled that the Unitarian Univeralist Church of Marblehead is once again hosting a benefit concert that will include Beatles music galore. This is the Tenth Annual "All You Need is Love" benefit featuring eight different acts all playing their own unique takes on Beatles songs. This year's show is on Saturday, May 30 at the UU Church of Marblehead on 28 Mugford Street. Part of the proceeds from this concert will go directly to a special fund to send musicians into local schools for workshops and concerts as well as to benefit programs at the UU church. The show is at 7:30 p.m.
The music of Bird Mancini features eclectic and at times a bit psychedelic acoustic rock pop style with lush vocal arrangements, blue-tinged guitar, accordion, harmonica, ad a variety of percussion, bells and whistles. They will be joined by the irrepressible T Max, the publisher/ editor of New England's longest running music magazineThe Noise. T Max can often be seen in the audience at the me&thee coffeehouse in his capacity as music reviewer and he's looking forward to giving back to the community and singing some Beatles songs for us.
Their set of Beatles music will definitely be a highlight of the evening.
Annabelle Lord-Patey comes from impressive rock and roll lineage. Her mother, Mary Lou Lord, has recorded several albums and is perhaps best known for her busking stints on the Red Line in Boston and Cambridge--even recording an album called "Live City Sounds." Annabelle's dad is Kevin Patey who books one of the coolest clubs in town, TT the Bear's. Annabelle and her mother have performed tribute shows in the past including one for Elliot Smith; even getting written up for their performance in The New Yorker and Rolling Stone.
John Fuzek is no stranger to tribute shows either. He's part of a Neil Young cover band called Forever Young. He is a Rhode Island based, award winning singer-songwriter-guitarist that has been performing around the Northeast and various points in the US for over 25 years. His folk-rock sound, unique guitar playing and vocal style has won him both fans and critical acclaim. John's original songs touch on the environment, politics, social issues, history and relationships.
Singer/Songwriter Britt Connors blends blues, folk, and country with jazz voicings and pop sensibilities. Her acclaimed debut album "The Bad Side of Good" presents insightful lyrics and captivating melodies that leave the listener with a vivid tapestry of imagery and sound. For the past decade, Britt has been honing her craft as a songwriter while building a loyal following and we're anxious to hear how she interprets the music of the Beatles.
Guitarist/songwriter Ethan Robbins is bringing some bluegrass interpretations of Beatles songs to this year's benefit. He is a member of the popular band, Cold Chocolate. A classical violinist from age four, Ethan fell in love with the guitar when he turned fourteen and has attempted to bring raw, rootsy sounds into his own original material. Imagine what he'll do with the Beatles!
Hailing from Portland, Maine, Kyle Morgan is a nomad artist of word and melody, a philosophizing songster who's dynamic style resists simple categorization. Though his writing draws heavily on the tradition of American song and its roots in old-time balladry and country-blues, there's too much Beatles and Kinks mixed in to accurately label it 'Americana'. Kyle is one-third of the band Tumbling Bones and traveled with them to Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, and Georgia to teach, perform, and collaborate with local musicians as part of a U.S. State-backed cultural ambassadorship. He's also an outstanding solo musician and we're looking forward to hearing his Beatles covers.
Allysen Callery is self taught folk artist from Rhode Island, USA , with an intricate & unique finger style, & a voice that has been called mesmerizing & angelic. Growing up in New England, she was heavily influenced by her parent's British Isles Folk Revival records of the late 60s early 70s. Allysen has toured Europe and has played many prestigious listening rooms in the U.S. She was ranked highly by The Washington Post & out of 1500 acts made a list of 40 by NPR 's Bob Boilen for "Intriguing unknown artists.
A recent addition to this year's roster is Patti Rothberg. She is a NYC based singer, songwriter, recording artist, multi-instrumentalist and painter/artist. Her debut album debuted on the Billboard Alternate Music charts at Number 25; she's appeared on David Letterman and has had her songs placed in films.
Scrambled Eggs (Mike Birch, Grady Moates, Lin Sprague, and Kevin Wall) have perfected their well-crafted harmonies and spot-on interpretations of Beatles songs. They have pretty much become the Beatles Benefit house band. Their enthusiasm and spirit are infectious. This year they will be performing many songs from the Beatles first movie, "A Hard Days's Night" and be prepared for some great singalong moments as well.
Everyone is welcome to come out on Saturday, May 30 to support the Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead as well as all of these wonderful musicians who have donated their talent and their valuable time on a "gig night" to help with this benefit.Tickets are available on the church website: www.uumarblehead.org. at Spirit of 76 Bookstore, Arnould's Gallery or at the door. Adults: $20, Children $5 or Family package: $45. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served throughout the evening.
