Music for the Integrated World: A Hybrid Music Series
ENSEMBLE MIK NAWOOJ IN TWO CONCERTS OF NEW MUSIC
Music For the Integrated World: A Hybrid Music Series
MARCH 26 IN BERKELEY AND APRIL 22 IN SAN FRANCISCO
San Francisco, CA, January 27, 2011 Hard on the heels of their tremendously successful, sold-out hip-hop chamber opera, Great Integration, summer and fall Bay Area tour and CD release, JooWan Kim and Ensemble Mik Nawooj have announced Music For the Integrated World: A Hybrid Music Series, to be given two performances in Berkeley and San Francisco March 26 and April 22.
The concerts feature new music by composers JooWan Kim and Jacob Bertrand, and performers include Kim, vocalist Christopher Nicholas and clarinetist Ricki Nelson in the groundbreaking, genre-blurring style of hybrid music that has brought Kim and Ensemble Mik Nawooj to the attention of legends like Ahmad Jamal.
Performances will be given Saturday, March 26, at 8 pm at Rae Douglass Gallery in Berkeley and Friday, April 22, at 8 pm at the Red Poppy Art House in San Francisco.
The concerts are presented by Golden Fetus Records. Information: http://www.goldenfetus.com/ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Great-Integration-A-Chamber-Hip-Hop-Opera/170827364499
The program for both concerts includes S for Solitude, Sorrow and Sophia (for solo piano),3 pieces for piano, bass and jazz voice (with vocalist Christopher Nicholas), musical excerpts from the play James Baldwin: Down From the Mountaintop (for string quartet), Etude for clarinet and string quartet, bass, and clarinet by Jacob Bertrand, Apatheia for string quartet and bass, and Ataraxia for string quartet, bass, and piano.
Completing the program will be a special screening of Black Swordsman Part 2 music video and short Q & A session with the directors Pete Paduano & Garret Franz. This screening will also mark the official launch of the production of the film, "Great Integration: A Chamber Hip-Hop Opera".
All music is composed by JooWan Kim except where noted.
Kim's music incorporates elements from hip-hop and classical, creating a unique hybrid that is in the spirit of Gershwin and Piazzolla, both of whom pushed and blurred the boundaries of vernacular and art music. Backed by his own Ensemble Mik Nawooj, JooWan Kim succeeds in accomplishing what most musicians want to but are unable to; creating a new kind of music that combines genres that are seemingly incompatible with each other.
Composer Jacob Bertrand has been playing violin and piano since childhood. He began his formal training in music as an undergraduate at Grinnell College (Grinnell, IA) where he was a music and biology double major.
He graduated from the music department with honors and has continued his studies in composition and theory with Berkeley-based composer and pianist JooWan Kim. He received his Ph.D. in cell biology from the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California San Francisco, where he studied virulence mechanisms of the opportunistic human pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
He is currently a visiting professor in the biology department at The Colorado College (Colorado Springs, CO).
----------------- "... nobody has ever attempted anything like this on such a large scale, or with such sophistication it's composers like Elvis Costello and JooWan Kim that are the true crossover artists, merging existing styles into something new and exciting that hasn't been done before" -Rik Malone, KQED (NPR)
" the blend of influences is so wonderfully integrated that one would be hard pressed to say which dominates overall perception was one of a composer and ensemble destined for greatness." -Mark Alburger, 21st Century Music
" JooWan Kim envisions a musical landscape that defies such categories as jazz, classical, and hip-hop." - Brenda Payton, Oakland Tribune
