Torah Trope Instruction
Learn to chant Torah! At Congregation Beth Sholom in San Francisco, our Torah services are "participatory," in that we have more Torah readers in our congregation than in any other. At Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, it is not uncommon to see parents, older siblings, and other family members reading Torah along with the Bar/Bat Mitzvah. On any given Shabbat, it is not uncommon to see anywhere from 1 to 7 different readers.
The only requirement for this class is that you be able to read Hebrew. You don't have to read FAST, and you don't have to be fluent in the language, but you do need to be able to read Hebrew. You WILL learn to chant Torah, and you will be given an assignment to work on. This could be for an upcoming Shabbat "graduation ceremony" with the class, or for a family Bar/Bat Mitzvah, etc., whichever the student chooses.
Kenny Altman is San Francisco's only Stand-up Comic and Torah Trope Instructor. He has been teaching Torah Trope at Congregation Beth Sholom, and at other locations throughout the Bay Area, since 1999, and has taught over 200 people to chant Torah and Haftorah, most of those at Congregation Beth Sholom. He is currently the lead Bar/Bat Mitzvah tutor at Congregation Beth Sholom.
Please note this class is for members and non-members of Congregation Beth Sholom.
