Kocho
With music by Garrett Fisher ("a strong, unified and striking individual utterance of unambiguous beauty" -The New York Times)and choreography by Christy Fisher ("fierce...urgent" -The New York Times), Kocho is a multimedia music-theater piece based on the Noh play of the same name. It tells the story of a wandering Priest who meets a butterfly and "liberates" it by letting it dance under the plum blossom.
Kocho is the 10th full length piece that Fisher has created that bridges the ancient and the modern, archetypal and urban, the ritualistic and the improvised. With the support of the Internationally acclaimed Fisher Ensemble (formed in 1994), the score incorporates sounds and instruments from multiple cultures, including gongs, 6 string fretted acoustic bass, flute, trombone, Indian harmonium, and vocalists.
As with many Noh plays, the elements of dramatic conflict are intended to be either very scarce, or they are sublimated into pure lyricism. The audience is not bound by the narrative but is instead encouraged to experience the "drama" from the inside out - through the appreciation of site and sound as it unfolds around them.
