Arcadia, by Tom Stoppard
Artists' Repertory Theatre (ART) presents Arcadia, by Tom Stoppard, directed by Michael Peterson. The play is a poetical and mathematical romantic "who dunnit?" set in both the modern era and the Regency period (early 1800's), of England. The action all takes place in one room, but it flip-flops back and forth from the past to the present in exciting and interesting ways. Within the play there are references to the famous poet Lord Byron ("She walks in beauty like the night...") and the mathematicion Fermat (forgive the spelling, he's French) who formulated a famous "last" theorem similar to, but sort of opposite of, the one by Pythagoras. There's also stuff in there about Newtonian physics, the laws of entropy and fractal imagery.
Oh! and did I mention it's a romance? A young idealistic girl from an aristocratic family falls in love with her dashing tutor. There's some sexual shenanigans, a duel at dawn, and lots of talk about gardening and landscape design, plus beautiful costumes of the Regency period (think Pride and Prejudice). We hope to see you there!
