Wayne Wallace Latin Jazz Ensemble - An Electric Storm of Latin Rhythms and Melody
Trombonist Wayne Wallace's skills as a musician, bandleader, composer and arranger are so revered by his Bay Area musical brethren that he's known, simply, as "the Doctor."
As a young player, Wallace got his first taste for Latin jazz performing with Pete Escovedo--a pretty good start--and for many years Wallace honed his skills, and developed his passion, with the Afro-Cuban jazz cauldron that was John Santos' famed Machete Ensemble. His knowledge of, and ardor for, this fiery music has been enhanced further by several trips to Cuba.
This year, Wallace burst forth with not one, but two highly acclaimed CDs, Dedication and The Reckless Search for Beauty. The first is a high-energy large ensemble jazz recording, and the second is a Latin jazz celebration.
Mark Keresman of the East Bay Express, called The Reckless Search for Beauty. "an inspired mix of originals and covers, with arrangements based on several styles of Caribbean or South American dance music or creative combinations thereof."
All About Jazz said of the CD, "This is a 'put on your dancing shoes affair' for the most part, and Wayne Wallace displays a method behind his reckless search for musical beauty."
The Wayne Wallace Latin Jazz Ensemble includes pianist Murray Low, bassist David Belove, drummer Paul Van Wagenigen, percussionist Michael Spiro and, of course, Wayne Wallace on trombone.
As profound as Wayne Wallace's involvement with Latin jazz has been over the years, "the Doctor" has also long been adding power and grace to jazz ensembles, R&B bands, and funk groups throughout the Bay Area, in the studio and onstage.
As a young musician, the life-long San Franciscan was often the first call trombonist for a wide range of traveling musical stars as they passed through town. He's played with everyone from McCoy Tyner to Ray Charles, from Count Basie to Sammy Davis, Jr., and from Santana to Sonny Rollins.
