John Prine Turns 40: A Tribute to his 1971 Debut Album - featuring Matt Newberg
This month marks the 40th anniversary of the release of John Prine's 1971 debut album. The album is as potently relevant now as it was then. It seems "Sam Stone" will have to be infinitely re-written. Though it may be one of the most powerful tunes on the album there are topics other than war eloquently explored legalization of marijuana, environmental issues, farming and local agriculture, isolationism, agingyou name it. It's timeless material. Matt Newberg leads a troupe of top caliber local talent, including Steve Jones, Gregg Hoover, Jeff Glidden, Stu MacDonald, Mason Thayer, and Laura Piela to perform the album song for song, with an encore of other Prine classics. The Maine chapter of Veterans for Peace will be at the performance, as well as celebrated Maine poet Gary Lawless who writes poetry with wounded combat veterans.
