Short Stories Live: American Dreams
Kurt Beattie has selected stories by three of this country's most celebrated contemporary writers, all commenting on the American Dream. Nathan Englander, who burst on the scene in 1999 with his highly-applauded, For the Relief of Unbearable Urges contributes "Reb Kringle," his story centered centered on Orthodox Jewish life. E.L. Doctorow's 2004 collection, Sweet Land Stories, employs his spare, laconic style to drill into the failures of the American Dream ("A House on the Plains"). Haitian-born Edwidge Danticat writes about how the legacy of political terror impacts the lives of immigrants in "Seven," part of her story collection, The Dew Breakers.
