Toward Chaos
Join Standing Wave as we tread the knife's edge between musical chaos and order.
A concert of contemporary chamber music infused by thrash metal, horror movies, and obsessive behaviour, Toward Chaos will feature Nicole Lizée's shocking Hitchcock Études, Gordon Fitzell's arresting violence, and Edward Top's arrangement of Jeff Hanneman's staggering Angel of Death. We'll also play Philip Glass's seminal work Music in Similar Motion, as well as the world premiere of Seven for Six by Vancouver's own Alfredo Santa Ana.
It's chamber music at its least precious and most thrilling!
Standing Wave is an ensemble of six exceptional musicians who perform contemporary music with virtuosity and style, cutting across musical landscapes with sharpness, wit and intelligence. The ensemble is equally comfortable performing complex chamber compositions, new music and works with electro-acoustics. Their adventurous programming and dynamic performances combine to capture listeners' hearts and imaginations, placing Standing Wave at the forefront of Canada's new music scene.
Since its formation in 1991, Standing Wave has presented an annual season of concerts in Vancouver, has toured across Canada, collaborated with Kokoro Dance, Ballet BC, Redshift Society, Rumble Theatre, and Vancouver New Music Society. They've been featured as part of the VSO's New Music Festival, PuSh Festival, Vancouver New Music Festival, MusicFest Vancouver, the Victoria Symphony's New Currents Festival, Vancouver Pro Musica's Sonic Boom, and the Vancouver International Jazz Festival. Standing Wave's third album, Liquid States, was nominated for two Western Canadian Music Awards in 2013.
