In the world of independent film, Hal Hartley is among its brightest lights. His body of work over the last two decades has defined what independent filmmaking means â a personal creative vision that stands in contrast to Hollywood mainstream âfilm by committeeâ product.
It is our honor, then, to present them this evening each with the Spirit of Silver Lake Award for career achievement in independent cinema. Our annual award pays tribute to individuals both in front of and behind the camera who have embraced and advance independent cinema. Past recipients have included John C. Reilly, Laura Dern, Mark Ruffalo, Julie Delpy, Mary Woronov, Kenneth Anger, Penelope Spheeris, Allison Anders, Charles Burnett, Cassandra Petersen and Curtis Harrington.
Following the presentation of the awards to Mr. Hartley, the West Coast premiere of FAY GRIM will be screened. The evening concludes with the Opening Night Gala Party, featuring the legendary Circle Jerks, and presentation of the Music Visionary Award to punk icon Keith Morris, founding vocalist of Circle Jerks and Black Flag.
