The Historical Society of Rockland County Invites You to Join Us for
"The Brinks Robbery: The Impact on Rockland County," A Golden Anniversary Lecture by Bob Baird
When: Thursday, May 28, 2015; 7:15 sharp Where: History Center, 20 Zukor Road, New City Admission: $FREE (reservations required)
The Brinks Robbery of 1981 was a seminal event in the history of Rockland County. The robbery, which began with the ambush of a Brink's armored car at the Nanuet Mall by members of the radical Black Liberation Army and Weather Underground, resulted in the deaths of Brink's guard Peter Paige and Nyack Police Officers Edward O'Grady and Waverly Brown. The tragic events of October 20, 1981, changed not only how law is enforced but also the entire structure of government in Rockland County.
Bob Baird retired in 2012 after almost forty years at the Journal News, including stints as managing editor, executive editor and local columnist. Under his leadership, the newspaper was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize and twice won the Associated Press Managing Editors Association national public service award, something no other newspaper of any size had done at the time. With County Historian Craig Long, Bob coordinates an annual day-long Leadership Rockland program on county history and continues to write and speak on history topics throughout the county.
Please join us at the HSRC's History Center, 20 Zukor Road, New City, NY, for this special evening lecture. As a courtesy to the speaker, please arrive early to avoid interruptions.
