CAIBANA FLAMENCO
CAIBANA FLAMENCO Presented by Flamenco Arts Center & Arte y Vida Chicago
The newest FUSION of the sounds of Flamenco and Cuba! A match made in heaven, nurtured in the warm sun of Andalucia and Havana. Come experience this nonstop danceable stream of Latin sounds, guaranteed to warm up the Chicago winter! Caibana, created by flamenco guitarist + composer Roberto Castellon, is a flamenco-latin fusion band based in New York City. The name "Caibana" comes from the combination of Cai (Cadiz), the oldest city in Spain and La Habana, Cuba (a city made by Spain to resemble Cadiz.) Caibana's music is the result of the fusion of these two cultures, and of flamenco and cuban music. Caibana is known for its enticing sounds and rhythms that fuse Afro-Cuban, Latin jazz and flamenco deep songs (Cante Jondo) into original music. Their compositions reveal the influence of Catalonian-born singer PERET, the musical leader of Catalan Rumba, who in the 60s was fusing Afro-Cuban rhythms, choruses, and songs with flamenco aire. Their first album is scheduled to be released in 2011.
