Kalapriya Presents Swaranjali: An Evening of Carnatic Music and Harikatha by Shiv Subramaniam and Aditi Sriram
Soak in an environment of talams, ragams, and folklore specially curated by Kalapriya!
Shiv Subramaniam, a young leading vocalist, will perform a traditional yet innovative Carnatic music concert, accompanied by flute and mridangam (South Indian drum). Shiv is a graduate of comparative literature from the University of Chicago. His research paper presented the literature of the Bhagavad Gita. He is currently a Sanskrit scholar at Columbia University in New York. He has studied Carnatic music under several scholars and is a regular performer at the Chennai Music Festival.
"Harikatha" or "Katha Kalakshepa" is an Indian storytelling art in which the raconteur enlivens an otherwise simple tale with song, philosophy, scripture, and humor, creating a world of story around the audience. Aditi Sriram, the story-teller, has written, produced and performed the Harikatha in New York City amongst several other places with vocalist support from Shiv Subramaniam.
The engaging stories in Swaranjali by Aditi will explore ancient Indian traditions, trespass into ancient Greece, bring Carnatic ragams to life, and honor some favorite folklore. Shiv and Aditi are both second generation Indian Americans born and educated as Americans; their story telling style is intrinsic, contemporary and attractive to young adults, the youth and music lovers of all ages!
Doors open at 5 pm. The concert begins at 5:30 pm with the captivating Harikatha followed by an incredible hour of Carnatic compositions. See you there!
