Civil War Medicine, on the Crossroads of Healing
Bert J. (Hans) Davidson, physician and Executive Director of the Southern California Medical Museum, will present on the medical care administered during the Civil War before the development of modern evidence-based medicine. Overwhelmed by infectious diseases, lack of trained doctors and supplies, and without a concept of hygiene, soldiers faced a high mortality rate both on and off the battlefield.
Artifacts from Davidson's personal collection of Civil War medical instruments will be on view in the exhibit "When Johnny Came Marching West: How the Civil War Shaped Pasadena," including an amputation kit, a pocket surgical kit, and an earhorn. In the fall of 2015, The Southern California Medical Museum will be opening in a new location at the Western University of Health Sciences, Pomona. It is the only museum in Southern California dedicated to the collection and preservation of medical artifacts and the recording of the history of medicine in the Inland Empire, California and the West.
