Yinka Shonibare MBE: Colonial Arrangements
Elaborate, colorful, seductive and quizzical, Yinka Shonibare's world-renowned, textile-based art has been the focus of more than 50 solo museum and gallery exhibitions worldwide. The latest, "Colonial Arrangements," places Shonibare's work, both new and established, inside the beautifully appointed period rooms of Morris-Jumel Mansion, Manhattan's oldest house.
"Colonial Arrangements" kicks off May 1st with a two-tiered opening. At 6 p.m., we commence our VIP Preview Hour, to be attended by the artist. Enjoy first-look access to Shonibare's work, including a newly commissioned, never-before-seen piece, "The Ghost of Eliza Jumel." Sip signature cocktails, concocted by the whiskey experts at Manhattan Moonshine, while delighting in the fine fooderies cooked up by all-star chef Rafael Palomino. Attendees also receive a VIP gift bag.
At 7 p.m., we open the doors to the general public. Refreshments will be served. The general opening is free; the VIP Preview Hour is $50. Proceeds go to the underwriting of Morris-Jumel Mansion's diverse array of educational and cultural programming.
Note: the opening takes place not only in the Mansion, but also on the bucolic grounds of surrounding Roger Morris Park -- in all it's early summer splendor. Both the house and the park are accessible.
