Private Cocktail Reception in the Garden of the William Gibbes House
There will be a cocktail party in the garden of the William Gibbes House on Friday, May 22nd, from 6-8pm, to benefit the Preservation Society.
We are delighted to offer this opportunity to our members on a first come, first serve basis, as tickets will be limited to 50 people.
Ticket will be priced at $75 per person.
The garden in which the party will take place was designed by famed landscape architect, Loutrel Briggs.
Briggs introduced most of the garden plan, planting and hardscape from 1927-1931.
Mrs. Cornelia Roebling, the widow of Washington Roebling, whose family designed and built the Brooklyn Bridge, brought Briggs to Charleston. Mrs. Roebling, a South Carolinian, moved back to Charleston upon the death of her husband in 1926, when she acquired the property.
As his first garden in Charleston, Briggs insured that the garden was featured in all of the leading periodicals of the time, from Town and Country to Country Life, in order to advertise his presence in Charleston and secure additional assignments.
