Veil & Balancing Belly Dance Workshops with Tava Naiyin of CT/NYC in Portland, ME
Belly dancers of all levels are welcome. 1-2 sessions of belly dance experience needed. Newer dancers will learn new skills. Experienced dancers will learn new approaches to both topics!
"Finding Balance: Introduction to Balance Props" Sat 4/27, 11:30 AM-1:30 PM Participants will learn the fundamentals of balancing with various body movements and positions. In order to move with something resting delicately on the head, it is necessary to have clean isolated body movements with the spine in alignment. This workshop will break down the foundations of balance work and introduce leans (flexion, extension and lateral leans), turns, creative body lines and level changes (optional). Emphasis will be placed on integrity of movement rather than a list of tricks. If you're curious to add balancing into your dance repertoire, learn Tava's tried and true tips including: "oops recovery," how to avoid "balance face," and various methods for reducing prop sliding without cheating.
"Veil: Inside the Lines and Outside the Box" Sat 4/27, 2:30-4:30 PM The veil is an unpredictable dance partner but it brings breath, richness and emotion to our dance. Being "in control" of the veil is not necessarily the best way to approach with flowy fabric. Allowing the space for unplanned movements can yield exciting results. This workshop will focus on dramatic lines, holds, wraps, exciting releases and slides. Students will learn to be in the moment and embrace the unpredictable aspects of working with light fabric and to infuse their movements with meaning.
