Join us for our Season Four 2011 Season of Change!
The promise we hear trotted out every election: CHANGE! That oh so manipulative, often empty, yet politically-charged word. The thing we pledge to do: "We can change!" and the thing we hope for: "If only things would change." Change can be the hardest task we undertake, yet it's the only thing to remain constant in our lives. Change can be the thing we most fear. And some do everything in their power to avoid it. Ah, change!
DENTAL SOCIETY MIDWINTER MEETING by playwright-in-residence Laura Jacqmin February 24 to March 26, 2011 Directed by Megan Shuchman 16th Street tells the stories of ALL in our community, so yes: even the dentists!!! In a field obsessed with profit over health, how can a group of upright dental professionals (looking for something more... filling) actually make a difference? "Jacqmin's passionate morality play in the guise of a super-smart comedy of manners is bound to hit a nerve. Highly Recommended!" Chicago Sun-Times. Laura Jacqmin is 16th Street's 2011 playwright-in-residence. Part of 100 Club Series and Part of 3-play Subscription
OUR DAD IS IN ATLANTIS by Javier Malpica, Translated by Jorge Ignacio Cortinas April 14 to May 21, 2011 In Mexico, an 11 year-old boy and his 8-year old brother are left behind with relatives they barely know when their widowed father goes to 'the promised land' to find work. We witness snapshots of their dreams (baseball!) and fears (devil in the mirror!) while they take care of each other, imagine their future and navigate a journey well beyond their years. Presented last spring as a staged reading at Goodman's Latino Festival. Part of 100 Club Series and Part of 3-play Subscription
THE CROWD YOU'RE IN WITH by Rebecca Gilman July 7 to August 13, 2011 Directed by Ann Filmer To breed or not to breed? During a backyard barbecue on the 4th of July, we meet two couples in their early thirties - one on the brink of parenthood and the other trying to conceive. When the older couple from upstairs rattles the party, the friends' sense of themselves and their future is changed. Are two people in love enough? Rebecca Gilman's plays include The Glory of Living, Spinning Into Butter, and Boy Gets Girl. Part of 100 Club Series and Part of 3-play Subscription
