Zebulon, Elder Ones and Period
$10 in advance, $15 at the door
Three acts on one bill: Zebulon (Peter Evans, Kassa Overall and John Hébert) Elder Ones (Amirtha Kidambi, Matt Nelson, Max Jaffe and Brandon Lopez) Period (Charlie Looker, Mike Pride, Chuck Bettis
Zebulon is Peter Evans' exploration of the rare trumpet-bass-drums format. Featuring bass virtuoso (Fred Hersch, Andrew Hill, Mary Halvorson) and drummer Kassa Overall (Geri Allen, Das Racist, Arto Lindsay) the trio has been melting minds since their formation at the eponymous Brooklyn club in 2010. Their debut album on Evans' More is More label was described in Downbeat magazine as "jaw-droppping". After a couple of European tours and USA concerts, the group is preparing the release of "Zebulon Part II: The Return of Zebulon" in early 2015. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZ0WxqpjeWY&app=desktop
Elder Ones is quartet performing the conceptions of vocalist/composer Amirtha Kidambi (Seaven Teares/Elizabeth-Caroline Unit), lies nestled in a venn diagram of musical spheres and communities in New York City. Featuring Amirtha on voice/harmonium, saxophonist Matt Nelson (Battle Trance/Tune-Yards), bassist Brandon Lopez (Vape Drip) and drummer Max Jaffe (Killer Bob/Ava Mendoza), the group traverses through Alice Coltrane-esque cosmic grooves, Carnatic derived modalities, harmonium drones, and modernist angularities. The band takes its name from Lovecraftian lore, hoping to create a vibe that is both alien and ancient. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLnSENnw-5w
Period Since 2006, Period has aggressively existed on a new frontier of improvised music. Without conforming to any one genre's rules, Period creates a sound that exists in between the worlds of metal, free form jazz, electronics & glacial rock music. Featuring Charlie Looker (Zs, Extra Life, Psalm Zero, Seaven Teares), Mike Pride (From Bacteria to Boys, Pulverize the Sound, Drummer's Corpse) and Chuck Bettis (Mossenek, Brown Wing Overdrive), their first album, a coveted underground collector's item, "PERIOD" was released in 2006 on Fucking A Show Releases and Funhole Records, and sold out almost immediately. Their first new CD in eight years, "PERIOD 2", comes out in May on Public Eyesore and features further developments into a sonic world all their own. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPSpZDdnHbk
