Children's Workshop All Five Days (ages 8 &9)
Monday, July 20 is Papermaking: Discover how fun it is to make your own paper, especially when it includes natural materials such as leaves and flower petals. We will spend some time exploring Bloedel and gathering materials. Then it's back to the art studio to make some paper. Please bring a basket or a bag to help carry collected materials. Each student will make at least one sheet of paper to take home. Students should wear hat/sunscreen and appropriate walking shoes and bring a snack and water bottle.
Tuesday, July 21 is Bookbinding: Let the beauty of Bloedel inspire your creativity as we take our handmade sketchbook/journals out into the field. The first half of the class will be spent making your very own blank book and the second half will be spent outside exploring Bloedel and filling our books with all kinds of creative expression. All materials provided but if you have any favorite drawing materials, please bring them. Each student will take his or her book home. Students should wear hat/sunscreen and appropriate walking shoes and bring a snack and water bottle.
Wednesday, July 22 is Mapmaking: Have fun exploring the trails and gardens of Bloedel while creating a mixed-media map of your adventure. We will spend most of our time outside immersing ourselves in the sights and sounds of nature, learning how to translate our experience into a unique visual record. All materials provided but if you have any favorite drawing materials, please bring them. Each student will take his or her map home. Students should wear hat/sunscreen and appropriate walking shoes and bring a snack and water bottle.
Thursday, July 23 is Printmaking & Poetry: Connect inner and outer landscapes as we explore Bloedel. Then head back to the art studio to express ourselves through some fun and spontaneous printmaking and poetry forms. Please bring a small notebook and pencil with you. All other materials provided. Each student will take his or her work home. Students should wear hat/sunscreen and appropriate walking shoes and bring a snack and water bottle.
Friday, July 24 is Nature Mandalas: Create a work of art from natural materials gathered at Bloedel. We will spend some time exploring Bloedel, gathering materials such as rocks, sticks & leaves. Then, using the ground as our canvas, we will create our Mandalas based on the principles of pattern and symmetry. Please bring a basket or a bag to help carry collected materials. Each student's finished work will be photographed and emailed home. The mandalas will remain at Bloedel where they will be enjoyed by other visitors. Students should wear hat/sunscreen and appropriate walking shoes and bring a snack and water bottle.
