Closer by Patrick Marber
Considered by some to be a late nineties "period piece", Closer is a dark, biting, and often-comical journey of four characters sent on an emotional roller-coaster of infidelity, sexual politics, and the search for real love and happiness in our chaotic modern world. Dan meets Alice, Dan falls in love with Alice and meets Anna, Anna falls in love with Larry, Dan falls in love with Anna. From blind dates, to internet sex, to intimate flat dwellings to high-end strip clubs, each character fights and claws their way towards an uncertain future.
Patrick Marber is an award-winning playwright and screenwriter. His other works include Dealer's Choice, After Miss Julie, and Notes on a Scandal. Closer premiered in 1997 and was nominated for the Tony, Out Critics Circle, and Drama Desk awards for best play. The West End production won the Evening Standard Award for Best Comedy, the Critics Circle Award for Best Play and the Olivier Award for Best Play. The play has been described as "A powerful, darkly funny play about the cosmic collision between the sun of love and the comet of desire"-Newsweek and "A bruising dissection of modern relationships."-Time. In the confines of the intimate Bohemian Theatre @ Heartland Studio blackbox space in Rogers Park, AstonRep Theatre Company is excited to share its own unique, raw, intimate telling of this powerful play.
