Recent developments in brain imaging techniques have opened the door to an increased understanding of how the human brain experiences and responds to the built environment. Emerging neuroscience research in this area can contribute toward the design of built space that sustains its occupants, is valued and will therefore endure, thus preserving all the natural resources and embodied energy that went into creating it. In addition, a building that allows the users to perform to their fullest potential, could enable its occupants to work, learn, heal, create, at a higher level.
Over recent years, the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture (ANFA) has been developing effective links between research on the brain, the mind, and the practice of architecture. The Academy was created in 2003 as the Legacy Project for the AIA Convention when it was held in San Diego.
