Il Tabarro (the cloak) is a suspenseful tale of intrigue, infidelity and revenge. It involves a love triangle, a barge owner (Michele), his wife (Giorgetta), and a dockworker (Luigi) on a hot, sultry Parisian evening on the Seine River. Michele discovers the forbidden romance and ends the opera in a furious rage with a shocking surprise. The other comic characters such as Frugala, Tinca, and Talpa, offer some light-hearted moments for diversity. Puccini's music uses the evocative setting on the harbor to include fluid river images, some fun drinking themes and passionate, expansive duets and solos.
