Greg Schindel in concert at the Willits Community Theatre Playhouse on May 10, 2015.
Veteran folksinger Greg Schindel will appear in concert at the Willits Community Theatre Playhouse on May 10, 2015.

Greg's musical career spans 50 years and goes back to his mid-twenties in Newport Beach, California, when he dropped out of college to become a Top 40s musician and songwriter. After spending several years in southern California, where he honed his skills as an entertainer, Schindel moved to Marin County, where he played in a number of rock and folk rock bands.

Schindel moved to the Willits area in 1983.  Since settling here, Greg has performed at numerous concerts, festivals and benefits. He won Best Act at the Willits Country Pickers Fourth of July concert series three years in a row. He recorded three albums of original material, Originals (1984), Caretaker (1985) and a "greatest hits" album also titled Originals, which he released in 2002. Since 1988 he has performed 3 to 5 days a week on the Skunk Train as the Train Singer.  As the Train Singer, Greg has recorded and released 9 albums of popular and traditional train songs. Since 1988, Greg has also led the music at the St. Francis in the Redwood Episcopal Church.

Greg has continued to write heartfelt, lyrical songs that reflect his rural life and his spiritual approach to living close to the land. He accompanies himself masterfully on his four Martin guitars, including a 12 string guitar. He uses six harmonicas in different keys and also accompanies himself on the autoharp. His music is upbeat, acoustic, poignant and dynamic. According to show producer Mike A'Dair, Schindel is worth hearing. "His lyrics are incredible," A'Dair said. "I mean, Greg really captures the beauty and wonder and sadness and humor of life. He is a poet. He is a great performer."

For this concert, Schindel is going to focus primarily on that poetic, spiritual side. He may include a few train songs, but most of his material will be the classic troubadour Schindel.

The concert is set for 7 pm Sunday May 10, Mother's Day at the Willits Community Theatre Playhouse, 37 West Van Lane, in Willits. Tickets are only $10 and are available in advance at Mazahar, 38 South Main Street, or online at brownpapertickets. com Any tickets not pre-sold will be available at the door.
