ABOUT THE TRAINING
Acting and Voicing the Archetypes (also known as Acting and Singing with Archetypes) is a method of training developed by Frankie Armstrong and Janet B. Rodgers that combines body, voice, and imagination to fully embody the characters we play onstage. Archetypes are found across cultures through stories, myths, and legends. We find gradations of them in characters in literature, film, TV, even within ourselves. Some of them include: the Lover, the Trickster, the Noble Warrior, the Creator/Destroyer, Lucifer, the Mother, etc. Actors are led through imaginative journeys and use their bodies, voices, and personal imagery to explore the Archetypes, which are followed by reflection and discussion. As we explore the Archetypes, we learn more about our personal relationships to aspects of our identity and may be empowered by the possibility new character choices that live inside of us. Non-native English speakers are especially encouraged to apply and may explore the Archetypes in their first language.
In this workshop you will: - build a sense of ensemble from voice and body warm-ups - stretch yourself and increase your versatility as an actor - discover multiple ways of exploring a text - develop a better sense of yourself in relation to archetypal characters
TESTIMONIALS ABOUT THE ARCHETYPE WORK AND THE INSTRUCTOR
"Amy leads with confidence, creating a safe environment to dive into the landscape of these powerful archetypes. I came not knowing what to expect, and left with a sense of excitement and a desire to explore more. I was surprised by the depth and richness of my experience in such a short time!" -Lucia Rich, deviser and movement coach, MFA in Lecoq Physical Theatre
"The Archetype work that Amy led me through completely altered the way I look at creating. It was a transforming and emotional experience. The attention to detail allows you to immerse yourself in a world that is entirely yours while being entirely new. I discovered aspects of my personality that I didn't know existed. I am so grateful to have experienced this work and can't wait to dig deeper into it." -Thomas Hodges, singer and composer of the musical, "Dear Harvey"
"Singing and Acting through Archetypes became a journey to release and discover more about myself. With the idea "there is no wrong nor right", I was able to leave behind prejudices and let my body and mind play and express themselves freely, enjoying each moment, acknowledging my capacities and unlimited imagination. I am so thankful for having the opportunity not only to learn and increase my acting skills but also to feel and experience how much we are capable of doing when we just give ourselves permission to feel, act and react with our impulses and emotions more than with our thoughts." - Maria Silva, student and actor, Venezuela
