Corey Harris
Denver-born blues musician Corey Harris is a renaissance man. While music critics call the blues a dying art awash in modern day rock trappings, Harris has embraced the genre in its most traditional forms, even traveling to the source West Africa for inspiration and historical relevance at the foot of Ali Farka Tour, Malia's legendary guitarist. This meeting was filmed for Martin Scorsese's film, Feels Like Going Home. But Harris was already deep into the blues before the film, working as a rural teacher in Louisiana by day, and moonlighting as a New Orleans street musician in his spare time, conjuring up the ghosts of Robert Johnson, Lightin' Hopkins Son House, Skip James and Howlin' Wolf, among others. Yet, to call Harris simply a blues musician would be a disservice. Harris mixes his socially conscious lyrics with the flavors of the Caribbean, gospel, funk, R&B, reggae, Africa and jazz. The blues may be his base, but for Harris its really just a jumping off point in to a world filled with music.
