WORKSHOPS - Gowanathon III
GOWANATHON 3: WORKSHOPS!
Spoke the Hub invites kids and adults of all ages to take part in classes, workshops and demonstrations during GOWANATHON III weekend to help us raise money for a new stairway for Gowanus Arts.

SATURDAY WORKSHOPS & DEMONSTRATIONS:
10:00 AM - Yoga with B. Shakti Yoga sequencing that is traditional, spiritual and geometric.Yoga practise will guide and show oneself to oneself. Bring a yoga mat and wear loose clothing.
10:00 AM - KangaTraining with Sara Ann A series of cardio and strength-training classes that allow mothers to exercise while holding their baby or keeping their child nearby. Wear loose clothing and sneakers to dance in.
11:30 AM - Creative Dance & Yoga (Ages 3-6) with Kat Stansell Using movement games and improvisation, tiny dancers will explore make believe worlds through dance and yoga. Be prepared to dance in bare feet and to roll on the floor!
11:30 AM - Zumba with Laci Chisholm Fun but challenging Latin-inspired dance-fitness program that blends red-hot international music and contagious steps to form a "fitness-party" that is downright addictive. Wear loose clothing and sneakers to dance in.
12:30 PM - Hawaiian Dance with Kaina Quenga Experience the beautiful island culture and art of Hawai'i through dance, story, and song. Guests should be prepared to dance in bare feet.
12:30 PM - Karate with Randoph James Dojo Learn the basics of Kyokushin Karate. This class is generally geared for kids, but adults can also train. Dress in loose workout attire and bare feet.
1:30 pm - Abada-Capoeira with Ryan Johnson Learn the basic steps of Capoeira--a crouching, samba-like dance step called the ginga, a cartwheel called au, and rigorously practiced push-ups, lifted leg swings and a game-like drill with partners called roda. Dress in loose workout attire and bare feet.
2:30 pm - Red Ribbon Dance with Mei Yin Ng The Red Ribbon Dance is one of the most popular dances for the Chinese New Year (Spring Festival).The red ribbon and the movement of the dance symbolizes the fire which scares away evil spirits to welcome in a healthy and peaceful New Year.
2:00 pmFigure Drawing with William Bourassa, Jr. Learn to draw the human figure with speed and confidence. Nude Model (under 18 must have parental consent) -------------------------------------------- SUNDAY WORKSHOPS & DEMONSTRATIONS:
10:00 AM - Yoga with Dalienne Majors This class combines gentle stretching and easy postures with a focus on breath, alignment and mindfulness. A self-empowering and rejuvenating class. Please bring a yoga mat if you have one and wear loose clothing with bare feet.
10:00 AM - Making Stories Together with Alexander Borinsky Stories can be made out of pictures, words, songs, dances, winks, funny noises -- anything. We'll loosen up and then experiment with ways of making stories with partners and in small groups. Find things you never knew you lost, uncover tales you never knew you had to tell.
11:00 AM - Zumba with Bethina Sayegh Flores A total workout, combining all elements of fitness cardio, muscle conditioning, balance and flexibility, boosted energy and a serious dose of awesome!
11:00 AM - Lamp Making with Aeilushi Mistry Create and decorate natural palm-leaf lamps with traditional ceremonial colors to be used in a "procession of light & purification ceremony" leading down to the Gowanus Canal later in the day.
12 Noon - The Dance of Isadora Duncan with Lori Belilove & The Isadora Duncan Dance Company Experience the dance of Isadora Duncan, known to many as the "mother of modern dance". Practice the natural movements of walking, running, skipping, and moving from the "solar plexus". Dance phrases and improvisations from the original Duncan repertory will complete the experience. Feel free to wear bare legs and a free-flowing tunic if you like!
1:00 PM - Make Better Home Videos with Video Mom (2-hour shooting workshop) This workshop covers Video Mom's most important tips for shooting great cell phone videos. You'll get some hands-on practice and some great inspirational ideas for video projects. Please bring a video-capable cell phone with plenty of available memory!
1:30 PM - Gaarba Indian Folk Dance and Drumming with Aeilushi & Paulomm Mistry Participatory Community Folk Dance celebrating Shakti, as divine feminine creative power. Dance to be performed at the end of the Sunday GOWANA Showcase #2 and take part in the "Procession of Light" to the Gowanus Canal at 4:30pm
2:00 PM - Bow-Making Station with Lesley Ware Learn to make an easy-to-sew bow with children's sewing instructor and author Lesley Ware! Her new book, Sew Fab, is a sewing and style guide for young fashionistas. Sew a bow and turn it into an accessory! ------------------------ ALL WEEKEND:
"Squirrels Stories" Listening Booth with Jamie Courville This is the place for the things that are difficult to talk about. The first "Squirrels Stories" are short audio portraits of people living with cancer. More at www.SquirrelsStories.com
